Leaving Land with Design & Code / Next Level Tech
Lesson 4

In this lesson, youth learn how to 1) use variables, random numbers and conditional statements in block code to program a Micro:bit and 2) create a board game using Micro:bit inputs like temperature, random numbers and navigational directions. The Crab Cruisin’ with Micro:bit handout and self-guided video of the lesson are provided.

To prepare for the lesson:

  1. Print out copies of the Crab Cruisin’ with Micro:bit handout for everyone.
  2. Set up the self-guided interactive Crab Cruisin’ with Micro:bit on your class computer. Review it before the lesson. Make sure you have sound and internet access set up for the computer. It’s recommended to have the site projected on a large screen so youth can follow along together.
  3. A laptop or tablet per small group.
  4. Set up the MakeCode site for all laptops or tablets to be used by youth.
  5. Micro:bit and USB-b programming cable per small group. (Don’t confuse this with a USB-b power-only cable.) Micro:bit, cable and battery holder are available for purchase on Maker Shed.
  6. Micro:bit battery pack with 2 x AA batteries per small group (optional, only if disconnected from computer).
  7. Pencils for everyone. Notebook and markers per group.

During the lesson:

  1. Follow the instructions on the Crab Cruisin’ with Micro:bit Interactive. As you click through the steps on the interactive lesson, you’ll notice that there is an audio recording of the written descriptions for each section of the lesson. Play the audio so youth have a choice between listening to the words or reading the words on the screen.
  2. Have youth answer the quizzes that come up throughout the lesson together.
  3. When the interactive lesson is complete, distribute the Crab Cruisin’ with Micro:bit handout. Have youth work on the handouts in pairs. Share an extra sheet of paper for youth to use in brainstorming their empathy question ideas.
  4. If they feel comfortable, have a few youth share their Empathy Maps with the whole class. If time permits, have the rest of the youth share with another pair.
