AI & the Ocean / Climate Action
Lesson 5

In this lesson, youth learn how AI can support promoting ocean sustainability by designing a PSA (Public Service Announcement) using AI on Scratch. The Sustainable Oceans with AI handout and self-guided video are provided. It’s recommended that youth work in small groups on a computer or tablet with access to the Scratch website. A modification of the lesson (without Scratch) is shared in the guidelines below.

To prepare for the lesson:

  1. Print out copies of the Sustainable Oceans with AI handout for everyone.
  2. Set up the self-guided interactive Sustainable Oceans with AI on your class computer. Make sure you have sound and internet access set up for the computer. It’s recommended to have the site projected on a large screen so youth can follow along together.
  3. Review the handout, interactive and Scratch site before class.
  4. Pencils for everyone. Colored pencils or crayons, to be shared in groups, if available.
  5. A large sheet of paper for each group to use in sketching their PSA.
  6. Laptops or tablets set up to access the Scratch website (enough for youth to work in small groups). Set up a login for each group to access the Scratch site.
  7. Modification: If access to Scratch is unavailable, youth can create their PSA on paper. Provide construction paper, colored pencils/markers/crayons, tape/glue and recyclable items for them to use.
  8. Optional: Read Chapter 1 of  “Plastic, Ahoy!” by Patricia Newman.

During the lesson:

  1. Follow the instructions on the Sustainable Oceans with AI interactive. As you click through the steps on the interactive lesson, you’ll notice that there is an audio recording of the written descriptions for each section of the lesson. Play the audio so youth have a choice between listening to the words or reading the words on the screen.
  2. Have youth answer the quiz that comes up throughout the lesson together.
  3. When the interactive lesson is complete, distribute the Sustainable Oceans with AI handout. Have youth work on the handouts and computers in small groups.
  4. Modification: If access to Scratch is unavailable, youth can create their PSA on paper. Provide construction paper, colored pencils/markers/crayons, tape/glue and recyclable items for them to use.
