Spark wonder in your youth with Genomics Learning Journeys—three curated bundles of hands-on, interactive STEM lessons that illuminate the fascinating world of DNA science. In partnership with global genomics leader Illumina, STEM Next provides these lessons for afterschool and summer programs, helping young people see that innovation is truly in their DNA.
As a rapidly growing field with exciting career opportunities, genomics is a core focus of STEM Next’s Life & Health Sciences Center of Excellence at the Institute for a STEM Ready America. Whether learners are new to genomics or building on what they know, these lessons help them develop STEM skills, explore meaningful careers, and discover how breakthroughs in genomics are unlocking solutions in health, agriculture, and beyond. Each journey includes activities, lessons, career-connection videos, and step-by-step facilitation guides—specifically designed for out-of-school settings.
Genomics Learning Journeys Layout
Each learning journey includes three tiers of lessons to engage your learners based on their current grade and/or level of knowledge. Choose the lessons bundle that best fits your group of learners.
The Intro Lessons bundle is designed for learners in upper elementary and middle school grades with little to no prior knowledge of genomics.
The Intermediate Lessons bundle is designed for learners in or entering middle school grades, with some prior knowledge of genomics.
The Advanced Lessons bundle is designed for learners in middle and early high school grades with prior knowledge of genomics or skills necessary to understand genomics lessons. Youth consider certain questions and issues explored by industry professionals.
What Instructors Need
- Access to a computer and a projector or large screen to display videos, discussion points, and related activity slides that we have linked in the lessons.

Learners get a crash course on the foundation of genomics. In small groups, they participate in hands-on lessons that make the microscopic concept of DNA life-size and relatable. They also learn of the different careers that exist in the industry.
Learners consider the role genomics plays in the way we address viruses, bacteria and other diseases. Learners see how genomics can be applied to develop tools to improve our quality of life. In small groups, they participate in hands-on lessons that make microscopic ideas like gene editing relatable. They also learn of the different careers that exist in the burgeoning biotech industry.
