Prepare for lesson:
- Review video
- Either prepare a sample bracelet that follows a specific DNA sequence OR have a DNA code template ready to share with the class
- Supplies:
- Multicolored beads (handful per youth)
- String enough for each youth
During the lesson:
Activity 1
- Place youth in small groups, give them one of the 6 types of DNA mutation and have them describe the mutation to the class without words (they can choose to draw or mime it in their groups).
- The class gets to guess the type of mutation.
- For a challenge, have youth share their guesses after each group has gone.
Activity 2
- Show the class a sample bracelet of at least 20 beads (or a written sequence of bead colors) and give them 15 seconds to memorize the sequence.
- Have youth make bracelets replicating the sequence
- Have small groups compare their bracelets
- Have youth share out, what mutations were made? Tally the numbers. Is there a more popular mutation? Why do they think so?
