From developing cures for cancer to solving the world’s food crisis, genomics is full of meaningful and exciting career opportunities. These roles are critical to solving the biggest challenges facing people and communities by using genomics to unlock the code of life. Through our DNA science resources for educators, including hands-on activities like DNA extraction experiments and online learning journeys, we help young people across America discover that innovation is truly in their DNA—and that breakthroughs in health, agriculture, and beyond all connect back to the power of genomics.
STEM Next is proud to partner with global genomics leader Illumina on the “Future is Bright” campaign to bring the power and wonder of DNA science to young people nationwide. DNA Day is an exciting time to celebrate the power of DNA science and the many career opportunities it offers. Here are ready-to-use activities and free resources to get youth excited about DNA science ahead of DNA Day on April 25, 2026!
In this practical prep webinar for educators, we walk you through ready-to-use activities, free resources, and simple facilitation tips to help you plan a successful DNA Day experience.
Find hands-on activities from Illumina that help young people of all grade levels explore genetics, from how traits are passed on to how DNA is shaping the future of science and medicine.
From our partners at Discovery Education, this Virtual Field Trip explores how genetic mutations shape traits, drive cutting-edge medical discoveries and uncover fascinating insights from research conducted in space.
Through STEM Next’s Genomics Learning Journeys, educators can inspire youth with interactive lessons that reveal the incredible world of DNA. These ready-to-use lesson bundles help young people explore how genomics is driving breakthroughs in medicine, agriculture and beyond as they connect classroom learning to real-world careers. With engaging videos, hands-on activities, and step-by-step guides tailored for out-of-school settings, these journeys make complex science fun, relatable, and full of opportunity for youth of all backgrounds and experience levels.
“This was such an engaging lesson, and my students loved the career connections! Thank you for everything!”

Imagine decoding DNA to find cures for diseases, engineer crops that feed the world, or solve crimes using genetic clues. These STEM role models aren’t just imagining– they’re making it happen.
When Amelia Mock needed STEM activities she could lead on her own without a formal STEM background, STEM Next’s DNA Learning Journeys gave her everything she needed to make science learning hands-on and approachable — for her and for her students. With clear guidance and real-world activities, STEM Next’s Genomics Learning Journeys helped her guide students through decoding genetic sequences, exploring mutations, and connecting what they learned to real careers in health and life sciences. Through our partnership with Illumina, hundreds of educators like Amelia and more than 120,000 young people in afterschool programs nationwide explored DNA science in 2025 through hands-on activities and resources.
