In this lesson, youth learn how AI is used to make robots smarter through a self-guided video. Youth practice using Google’s Teachable Machine website and everyday plastic objects. The Smart Machines handout and self-guided video are provided. It’s recommended that youth work in pairs or small groups on a computer (or tablet) with access to the Teachable Machine website.
To prepare for the lesson:
- Print out copies of the Smart Machines handout for everyone.
- Set up the self-guided interactive Smart Machines on your class computer. Make sure you have sound and internet access set up for the computer. It’s recommended to have the site projected on a large screen so youth can follow along together.
- Review the handout and interactive. Be prepared to replay the tutorial on using Google’s Teachable Machine during the activity portion.
- Pencils for everyone.
- A few plastic objects like water bottles, containers or bags for groups to share.
- A few pictures or printouts of sea mammals or stuffed animals for groups to share.
- Laptops or tablets set up to access the Teachable Machine website (enough for youth to work in pairs or groups of 3).
During the lesson:
- Follow the instructions on the Smart Machines interactive. As you click through the steps on the interactive lesson, you’ll notice that there is an audio recording of the written descriptions for each section of the lesson. Play the audio so youth have a choice between listening to the words or reading the words on the screen.
- Have youth answer the quizzes that come up throughout the lesson together.
- When the interactive lesson is complete, distribute the Smart Machines handout. Have youth work on the handouts and computers either in pairs or groups of 3.
- Return to the tutorial on Google’s Teachable Machine to replay as needed.
- Have youth share out once they complete the activity.
