Prepare for lesson:

• Review Family Tree Worksheet guide
• Print out copies of Family Tree Handout for each youth
• Optional: The One and Only Me: A Book About Genes
• Supplies: Crayons or colored pencils

During the lesson:

• If available, read “The One and Only Me” to the class
• Ask youth what they know about genes. 
  • Are they familiar with sites like Ancestry.com? 
  • Why do they think people visit these sites?
• Share that a low-tech way of learning about genealogy is through a family tree.
• Distribute Family Tree Handout to each youth
• Have youth work on the family tree individually.
• Ask them if there are other traits that they notice about themselves or family members that they want to note on the tree?
