Prepare for lesson:
- Review Family Tree Worksheet guide
- Print out copies of Family Tree Handout for each youth
- Optional: The One and Only Me: A Book About Genes
- Supplies: Crayons or colored pencils
During the lesson:
- If available, read “The One and Only Me” to the class
- Ask youth what they know about genes.
- Are they familiar with sites like Ancestry.com?
- Why do they think people visit these sites?
- Share that a low-tech way of learning about genealogy is through a family tree.
- Distribute Family Tree Handout to each youth
- Have youth work on the family tree individually.
- Ask them if there are other traits that they notice about themselves or family members that they want to note on the tree?
