About the Role

We are searching for a dynamic and experienced Communications Director to lead our communications strategy and elevate our visibility as a champion for STEM educational equity and advancement through out-of-school experiences. As a member of the senior leadership team, you will play a pivotal role in crafting a compelling narrative about our work, amplifying our impact, and securing essential support for our mission.


    • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy that aligns with our organizational goals and objectives.
    • Oversee all aspects of external communications, including media relations, public relations, website management, social media management, and content creation.
    • Craft clear, concise, and engaging messaging across various platforms, including website, press releases, social media content, and donor communications.
    • Build and maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders, including media representatives, policymakers, partner organizations, and donors.
    • Manage and mentor a communications team including consultants. 
    • Stay abreast of industry trends and best practices in non-profit, education, and STEM  communications.
    • Develop and implement a data-driven approach to measure the effectiveness of communication efforts.
    • Represent STEM Next at industry events and conferences (as appropriate).
    • Support leadership, designated partners, and recipients at external events and conferences


    • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, or a related field (Master’s degree a plus).
    • Minimum 5+ years of experience in a communications leadership role, preferably within the non-profit sector or the education field.
    • Proven track record of developing and implementing successful communications strategies.
    • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
    • Strong understanding of social media marketing and content creation best practices.
    • Proficient in various website platforms and other communications technology tools  
    • Knowledge of  STEM education and/or the out-of-school-time and youth development field preferred.
    • Experience with media relations and crisis communication (a plus).
    • Budget management experience (a plus).
    • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • A passion for education and a commitment to our mission.

Salary and Benefits

The Salary Range for this position is $140,000-165,000.  STEM Next provides paid time off, sick leave and 13 federal holidays.  STEM Next provides a comprehensive set of benefits including: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Short Term Disability, Long Term Disability, 401(k) Retirement Plan, and Health Savings Account and Flexible Spending Account.


This full-time, exempt position can be done on a flexible schedule remotely from anywhere in the U.S. with access to high-speed internet. The candidate should be comfortable and equipped to work efficiently in a remote work environment
